Let's start with my own definitions of these two fields:
Architecture is the art of creating spaces that can interrelate between themself in a way that the fisical would turn emotional.
Trazado Reticular de la ciudad de Mileto en la Antigua Grecia (Hipodamo de Mileto)
Urban planing is the science that unites all the elements of a city considering the needs of the people that live in it.
Now here's a comparison and contrast paragraph I wrote after doing some research.
Architecture and Urban Planning: Different levels of public spaces.
Architecture is an art, and to be considered as such, it has to produce some sensations in you. An architect creates spaces that are normally considered as "private", but that "privacy" has its levels. For example, a living room is considered, inside a house, as a "public space" and a bedroom is considered as a "private" one.
On the other hand, Urban Planners organize spaces considering the whole building as a private block, creating spaces purely public defined by private ones.
Even though Architecture and Urban Planning deal with different kinds of spaces, they complement each other in order to create what we call the city.
In Caracas Architecture and Urban Planning aren't developed as in other cities around the world. The main reason of this problem could be that Caracas used to be a colony wich developed so fast into a city that not even architects or urban planners could stop its spontaneous growth.
The elements for a well planned city are there, such as great buildings, highways or streets. Architecture is practiced as much as Urban Planning, but unfortunetly it doesn't seem to be enough for our city.
